Springwater Conservation Area – Insects Galore !!

August 11, 2018

I headed out to Springwater Conservation Area in search of woodpeckers but instead I encountered tons of insects. I took the trail that I knew would take me past the marsh area and back into my favourite section of the forest. After reaching the boardwalk that goes through the marsh I took a moment to look around for any signs of wildlife.

View from the marsh area of Springwater Lake

I was admiring some wild flowers when I noticed a very large spider out of the corner of my eye. As I took a closer look I could see the very unique black and yellow markings on its body.

I left the spider and headed further up the boardwalk where I could see several different dragonflies landing and then taking off again. I crept up very slowly on this beautiful bright green dragonfly and was able to get a quick photo before it took off and flew away.

I also saw another dragonfly with a blue body and brown spots on its wings. It landed right in front of me at the end of the boardwalk and I was able to get a close look at it before it flew off into the marsh.

Dragonfly

I left the marsh area of the lake and headed into the forest section of the trails. After hiking for a little while I came across a culvert where I noticed some insects that looked like dragonflies but were different in their appearance. They were much smaller in size and their wings were centered on their back instead of their sides. Once I had gotten back home I able to determine that they were damselflies which are often mistaken for dragonflies.

Each time that I visit the conservation area I discover something new and I cannot wait to return to see what new adventure is waiting for me there.
